Why lobby your MP?
Your MP is one of 650 people who directly shape the laws and policies that govern how this country treats its environment. They vote on planning rules, energy policy, farming subsidies, and wildlife protection, and they’re supposed to do it on your behalf. The thing is, most of them will never hear from the majority of their constituents, which means the loudest voices tend to win. If hundreds of constituents are bringing up the same thing, it becomes impossible to ignore. You don’t need to be an expert or an activist you just need to be a constituent with something to say. That’s already enough to matter.
But I’m just one person…
It’s easy to assume that one letter won’t make a difference and honestly, that assumption is exactly what works in your favour. Most people never contact their MP at all, which means the bar is surprisingly low. A single genuine, personal letter from a constituent is already unusual enough to be noticed. And if you can get a few people around you to do the same thing, even just your household, a couple of friends, or a few neighbours, that small cluster of letters on the same issue from the same area lands with real weight. It signals that this isn’t one persons issue, it’s a community concern. You don’t need a campaign or a organisation behind you. A handful of people who actually care is already more than most MPs ever hear.
Write to your MP
It doesn’t have to be long or fancy. A short, personal email or letter explaining who you are, what you care about, and what you’d like them to do is surprisingly effective. MPs (and their teams) do read their post. The key is to keep it personal, a heartfelt paragraph from a real constituent beats a copypaste template every time.
Turn up to local meetings
Did you know your MP holds regular local surgeries where anyone can book a slot? You can just turn up. Or write to their office and request a dedicated meeting about your cause. Sitting across the table from someone makes it very hard for them to ignore you, especially if you bring a few like-minded friends along.
Speak to them when they knock on your door
During elections, candidates and come to your door. This is a great opportunity to ask them directly where they stand on the environment. It’s important to do this even with parties you don’t agree with. Their priority is getting elected, which means if enough people on enough doorsteps are asking the same questions, parties have no choice but to take those issues seriously and build them into their policies. You don’t have to vote for them. You just have to make them hear you.

A handwritten letter can be even more effective. You can write to any MP in the country at the same address: [MP’s Name], House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. No stamp needed!
Either way, the most important thing is to make it personal. Tell them why this issue matters to you. And even better? Get your family or friends to do it too!
