Love our street

Streets used to be for people…

Streets are public spaces that belong to everyone. In fact, they make up around 80% of all open space in towns and cities.

Yet today, it’s rare to see children playing outside or neighbours gathering casually. Many streets have become dominated by traffic rather than people so we are left with…

Unsafe space for children - Limited bioavailability - Underused public space

But there’s another way…

‘Woonerfs’ are simply streets built for people. They provide space for planting, eating outside, spending time with friends and even something as simple as somewhere to sit on a bench.

When was the last time you sat out on the street with some friends or used your street for anything other than a way to get your house.

Your street could be more than a way to get from A to B…

What else could streets be?

A community planting space

Growing berry bushes, Planting beautiful flowers, A community compost heap

Somewhere for community

Organizing street parties, A community seating area, A bench to chat with neighbours

Community energy projects

Community bought solar panels, Street-Scale Battery Storage

Here’s some ideas…

Somewhere for children to play

Lower speed limits, Designated play areas, Painted street games

Somewhere for nature to thrive

Bug hotels, A wildflower patch, Wild lawns

Sharing skills and tools

Lending your neighbour tools, Helping out with DIY projects

You’ve got big ideas for your street, but what next…

Hi I’m Lily-Mae and I’m passionate about bringing people together to create greener, happier neighbourhoods. I love turning big sustainability ideas into practical projects that help people feel connected to their community and confident to make a difference.

With a background in environmental education, community engagement, and project coordination, I’ve worked with charities, schools, local organisations, and councils to design initiatives that inspire positive change. Whether I’m developing resources, running nature sessions for families, or supporting local groups to take action, my focus is always on making sustainability accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable.
